Leaving Green Behind

Leaving Green Behind (2024) is an audiovisual project developed during an international residency in Marseille (France) as part of the Dos Mares platform. The work draws from personal memories, archival material, and field research collected in Madre de Dios, in the Peruvian Amazon, to explore tensions between extractivism, technology, and memory construction.

The project uses real data on the impact of illegal mining — including deforestation, territorial degradation, and biodiversity loss — as raw material to generate distorted images and soundscapes through artificial intelligence tools. Scientific information is transformed into a sensory experience that moves between documentary and dreamlike registers.

Rather than illustrating data, the work reinterprets it, shifting quantitative information into an affective dimension. The piece reflects on territory as both an emotional and political construction, and on technology as an ambiguous language — a tool of control and destruction, but also of reimagination.

By combining sound, digital imagery, and personal archive, Leaving Green Behind creates an immersive environment where individual memory intersects with structural environmental violence. The project questions how devastation can be represented without reproducing extractive logics, and how abstract data can be translated into embodied experience.
