Graphic novel / Science fiction / Dystopian narrative

181 is a science fiction graphic novel written by Jimmy Carrillo and illustrated by José Aguilar, inspired by Mosko-Strom (1933), the visionary dystopian novel by Peruvian writer Rosa Arciniega. Set in a near-future Lima transformed into the hyper-technological city of Cosmópolis, the story follows Max Walker, a programmer haunted by fragmented memories while working on an ambitious artificial intelligence project.

Through a dark and atmospheric visual language, 181 explores themes such as technological alienation, identity, social isolation, surveillance, and the promises — and dangers — of progress. The graphic novel revisits one of the earliest works of Latin American speculative fiction and reinterprets it through a contemporary lens shaped by artificial intelligence, digital dependency, and ecological collapse.

The project was awarded the 4th National Graphic Narrative Prize in Peru, organized by the Peruvian Ministry of Culture, the French Embassy in Peru, the Casa de la Literatura Peruana, and the Alianza Francesa de Lima. The jury highlighted the work’s narrative strength, visual identity, and successful adaptation of Arciniega’s original novel into the language of contemporary graphic storytelling.

Blending dystopian fiction, political reflection, and experimental visual storytelling, 181 positions the Amazon and Latin America not as peripheral landscapes, but as central spaces for imagining alternative futures and questioning the human cost of technological acceleration.
